Toddler Tantrum

We all know that tantrums are common amongst toddlers especially; even though the dictionary definition of a tantrum says that it is 'a sudden moment of unreasonable bad temper and anger'.

Clearly tantrums can happen at any age, and I'm certain that there are more than a handful of parents of toddlers who have them too!

I must confess that I too, on more than one occasion, have had an outburst of bad temper (minus the kicking, punching, sobbing and stamping of course).

But sometimes I think to myself, why is it okay for parents to throw tantrums, but not okay for toddlers?

We need to keep in mind that toddlers are great imitators, and they learn by example. Anything you say (or do), can and will be held against you in a house of toddlers! ;)

What I mean to say is that the more you allow yourself to lose control of your behaviour, the more likely it is for your toddler to do the same.

And there continues the vicious cycle of toddler (and parent) tantrums.

The Peak Tantrum Stage...Aaaargh!

This toddler tantrum behaviour is typically at its worst from around 18 months to 3 years of age. It gradually disappears after that, but is still quite common in some youngsters up to 6 years - so beware!

Tantrum-throwing can continue throughout life if you are not careful. It is unfortunate if you allow the tantrum throwing to become a bad habit. Again, watch your own behaviour.

This is not to say that toddlers only have tantrums because of the way you act around them. Tantrums are common during the toddler years and are pretty much a trademark of toddlers.

Of course, not all toddlers have tantrums. Some toddlers don't have them at all - congrats to the lucky parents of these toddlers! Some toddlers have tantrums only occasionally, while others have a never-ending cycle of them.

How do you stay calm when you've just told your toddler that it's not time to paint, but while you've had your back turned she's decided to draw a lovely mural on your white lounge-room wall...with a permanent marker?

Have a look at the articles below to find out some of the reasons why toddlers have tantrums, and what you can do about them.
