Toddler Party Tips

Organising and throwing a toddler party is fun isn't it? I know it's a lot of work, but the end result always gives you so much satisfaction - when your little darling's face lights up with a smile from ear to ear, doesn't it just give you the most wonderful feeling!

In your child's first and second year, her birthday party is generally kept low-key and is pretty much an excuse for family and friends to get together.

In some cultures the first birthday is an extravaganza, almost like a wedding!

The first and second birthday party is usually an event in which your toddler has completely no clue as to what's going on around her. In some cases it may even frighten her.

Just Who Are All These People...

If your tot has not yet started childcare or playgroup, or you do not have that many friends or relatives who come around to visit, then your tot may very well be intimidated by all those unfamiliar faces all gathered around her.

I remember my eldest daughter's first and second (and third!) birthdays where she went into a crying fit on every one of them. She was completely frightened by all the guests we had invited, that by the time it was her fifth birthday, we kept our numbers low.

As she was beginning to 'come out of her shell' at this stage, it was a much more enjoyable experience for all of us even though we had very little guests.

Then again, each child is different and it's probably a good idea to understand your toddler's personality and create her toddler party based on it.

Say for example your toddler is quite shy and has a placid nature, perhaps invite only your closest friends and keep the numbers low, at least until she gets older by which time she may be a little more outgoing.

The More the Merrier!

On the other hand, if you have a boisterous and extroverted little tot (just like my second daughter) who is generally good with people and even unfamiliar faces, then you might want to invite more guests. But remember not to go overboard!

When your toddler turns three, throwing a toddler party becomes much more fun as she has probably accumulated a number of little friends from childcare or playgroup.

This is a time when she has become very aware of what's going on around her and is able to interact with you and others at many levels.

It's Party Time!

Here are some toddler party tips that may help to make your next toddler party a mighty success: -

  • Have the party outdoors if possible, especially if the weather is good. Toddlers can create a lot of mess within minutes (I'm sure you know this), and if you have many of them running around - there sure will be plenty of it!
  • Ask for as much help as you can get from friends and relatives. Grandparents can be especially helpful at times like this as they love doing things for their grandchildren. Trying to organise such parties on your own will only stress you out
  • Try to keep the number of guests low (if you can), say fewer than ten. As cute as they are, any more than ten toddlers running around is likely to create havoc at your place. Another suggestion is to invite as many guests as your child is in age i.e. 2 guests for a 2 year old, 3 guests for a 3 year old and so on
  • Always set a time limit for the party. And remember, as they are still toddlers, their attention span is still very short. I would suggest to keep the party short - say no longer than 90 minutes
  • Invite one parent to stay with each child, just in case you are faced with a tricky situation that you just can't handle
  • Make sure to have an activity ready for the early-comers. Don't expect them to be too happy if there isn't anything for them to do while they wait for the others to arrive! Play dough and cutters is always popular with toddlers, bubble blowers, stickers, crayons and colouring books, toy cars, little squeeze toys, and face masks are just some of my suggestions
  • Plan at least one or two physical activities, preferably with music, as toddlers need to exert their excess energy. Simple activities like dancing, playing the "freeze" game, jumping and running around will keep toddlers happy for a good twenty minutes
  • Toddlers will find it difficult to 'hit' a pinata open, so try to find one that has a cord to pull to let the lollies and treats fall out
  • Send the kids home with a prize or party favour
  • Don't stress yourself out by organising too many toddler party games. Remember that you only have 90 minutes for the whole party and you don't want to wear out those little munchkins!
