Organising and throwing a toddler party is fun isn't it? I know it's a lot of work, but the end result always gives you so much satisfaction - when your little darling's face lights up with a smile from ear to ear, doesn't it just give you the most wonderful feeling!
In your child's first and second year, her birthday party is generally kept low-key and is pretty much an excuse for family and friends to get together. In some cultures the first birthday is an extravaganza, almost like a wedding! The first and second birthday party is usually an event in which your toddler has completely no clue as to what's going on around her. In some cases it may even frighten her.
Just Who Are All These People...If your tot has not yet started childcare or playgroup, or you do not have that many friends or relatives who come around to visit, then your tot may very well be intimidated by all those unfamiliar faces all gathered around her.I remember my eldest daughter's first and second (and third!) birthdays where she went into a crying fit on every one of them. She was completely frightened by all the guests we had invited, that by the time it was her fifth birthday, we kept our numbers low. As she was beginning to 'come out of her shell' at this stage, it was a much more enjoyable experience for all of us even though we had very little guests. Then again, each child is different and it's probably a good idea to understand your toddler's personality and create her toddler party based on it. Say for example your toddler is quite shy and has a placid nature, perhaps invite only your closest friends and keep the numbers low, at least until she gets older by which time she may be a little more outgoing.
The More the Merrier! On the other hand, if you have a boisterous and extroverted little tot (just like my second daughter) who is generally good with people and even unfamiliar faces, then you might want to invite more guests. But remember not to go overboard! When your toddler turns three, throwing a toddler party becomes much more fun as she has probably accumulated a number of little friends from childcare or playgroup.
This is a time when she has become very aware of what's going on around her and is able to interact with you and others at many levels.
