Toddler Behaviour Problems

As parents of toddlers, you and I both know that there is a very WIDE range of toddler behaviour problems, most of which, unfortunately, are very unattractive.

By speaking with other parents of toddlers, I've found that we experience very similar problems and also have pretty much the same concerns regarding those problems.

I think that this part of toddler parenting is the fuzziest of all. A lot of toddler behaviour is really normal behaviour, as strange and frustrating as it might be.

Oftentimes, we can perceive this "experimental" or "normal" behaviour to be toddler behaviour problems, when in fact it is just typical at this time in life.

I'm Gonna Bite You on Your Arm, Daddy!

Remember also that what we may consider to be problem may not be from your toddler's point of view. For example, biting (a frustrating but normal behaviour) may be the only way your toddler feels she can deal with a situation.

If she bites another child especially, it may be seen as aggressive behaviour, but it may not be aggressive in her eyes.

Try to see things from her point of view.

Doesn't it seem like there are now more toddler behaviour problems than in the past? How many times has your mother told you that "you never did such a thing", while your toddler repeatedly wreaks havoc around the house?

The increase in these problems has been blamed on things ranging from preservatives in food to violent shows on television.

Perhaps these days we as parents are just a lot more aware of behavioural problems, rather than there being an increase in them. We also are less likely to be blamed and accused of "being a bad mother" now than in the past.

There is so much help available these days from health care professionals, parent groups and parent education programs (for a small fee or even for free). These organisations focus specifically on toddler behaviour issues and can be very useful if you find that you cannot cope with your toddler's behaviour.

Eventually you will have to work out your own way of dealing with your toddler's behaviour. Even though when we mention the words "toddler behaviour" we seem to get an image of a fighting, screaming and kicking toddler, rolling around on the floor.

Sometimes we seem to forget that not all toddlers are the same, and we need to figure out a way of dealing with the specifics of our own toddler.

Here are some of the typical behaviours that are common among toddlers: -

  • Aggressive behaviour - includes hitting, kicking, pulling hair, throwing things and biting.
  • Temper Tantrums - we all know what happens here, and it's not pleasant!
  • Fear of separation (separation anxiety), or "clinginess".
  • Holding her breath.
  • Refusing to share.
  • Refusing to sit in the stroller or car seat. How many times has your toddler arched her back and became stiff as a plank and threw herself on the floor of the car, screaming at the top of her lungs, "I do it, mummy! I do it myself!" or "I don't want to go there!"
  • Head banging.
  • Nose picking, nail biting and hair pulling (trichotillomania).
  • Security blankets. My 3 year old carries around with her a "mama jumper" (an old t-shirt of mine), which she is extremely protective about - never lets anyone but herself and I touch it!
  • Whingeing, whining, screaming and (the dreaded) "screeching".
  • Thumb sucking.
  • These are just some of the common toddler behaviours. Of course, there are many others that may be common to a small group of toddlers, for example those with learning difficulties.

Don't Get Into a Power Struggle...

Try not to get into power struggles with your toddler, if you can avoid them. A lot of the behaviours in the above list have to do with your toddler refusing to do something.

For the sake of remaining sane, it is sometimes a good idea to work out what really matters - how important is the issue really?

There will be less stress on both you and your toddler if you just "go with the flow". HOWEVER, I'm not suggesting that you let your toddler get away with everything!

Just don't fret, you'll learn by trial and error what works and what doesn't when raising your toddler.
