Constipation in toddlers refers to the texture of her poo - not how often she goes. Specifically, a constipated toddler has difficulty passing a 'hard' poo.
Goodness, Gracious, Dry Balls of Poo!It's okay if your toddler only goes every few days and her poo is soft - she's not constipated. But if she goes five times a day and what comes out are pellet-like dry balls of poo, then she's constipated.Toddler constipation can either be mild or severe. In most cases, it is no reason for concern - even though your toddler may seem overly stressed by it. It can also be distressing for other family members. What causes your toddler to be constipated? Toddlers (especially up to the age of two) are very much prone to constipation for a variety of reasons including developmental stages, behavioural, nutritional and emotional.
Please Remember to Go, Sweetie...Among the developmental reasons, toddlers can become constipated because they're at a stage where they are just too busy with their activities and become distracted with other things that they simply forget or put off going to the toilet.
This "holding on" to poo for long periods can cause the poo to build up in your tot's bottom and become harder than normal. This build up can cause the bowel to not work regularly and normally. Your toddler's fussy eating habits may also contribute to constipation. Toddlers are notorious for their endless snacking, and this might lead to poor nutrition. A lack of fibre in your toddler's diet, either due to eating unhealthy snacks or simply non-eating, is a common reason for the bowels not working properly. Sometimes your toddler may complain that it hurts to poo, possibly due to eczema or nappy rash. Therefore she may not want to go to the toilet as often, just to avoid the pain and possible bleeding. Constipation may also happen due to major life events that cause sudden and significant emotional changes, but this is rarely so. Such emotional events may include a new baby in the family, starting child care, or even a short stay in hospital.
