Breakfast Ideas for Toddlers

Breakfast is probably the most important meal of the day. Since most toddlers have a night sleep of at least ten hours, they will inevitably feel hungry when they wake up in the morning.

Studies have shown that eating early in the morning gets the body's metabolism going efficiently. Skipping breakfast also negatively affects concentration and alertness.

I've noticed that if either of my girls have not eaten enough for breakfast, or have just decided to skip breakfast altogether (for some unknown reason), then they're likely to be grumpy by morning tea. And then they'll tend to ask for a snack, which if not provided on the spot, will throw a temper tantrum!

Make Breakfast a Good Habit...

This is why I always make an effort to encourage my daughters to eat a good breakfast and make a good habit of the breakfast routine.

I know that these days we mothers are so busy that we often don't have time to prepare a complex breakfast, either for ourselves or for our toddlers. As a full-time working mum a couple of years ago, I was fortunate enough to have my mother look after my eldest daughter while I was away at work. My mum had all morning to prepare, cook, and "coax" my daughter to eat her breakfast.

In my hurry to get to work, all I could manage to eat for breakfast was a breakfast bar or a banana - often eaten on the city train! While I made an hour-long commute to work, my daughter ate breakfasts such as:-

  • Boiled, poached or scrambled eggs, with wholemeal toast cut into fingers
  • Wholemeal toast cut into fingers with a topping of grilled cheese, ham, tomato or baked beans
  • Fruit smoothies
  • Pancakes and pikelets
  • Crumpets or waffles with various toppings, including fresh fruit
  • Muffins, either plain, sweet (with fruit) or savoury (with cheese, ham or vegies)
  • Yoghurt with fresh fruit
  • Breakfast cereal such as Weet Bix and Cheerios, either with or without milk
  • A bowl of porridge (quick oats or rolled oats cooked with full cream milk)
  • Further Breakfast Troubleshooting Tips

  • Avoid the chocolate-flavoured or coloured variety of breakfast cereal (such as Fruit Loops and Coco Pops). These are so high in sugar and colour it's really not worth giving it to your toddler. In fact, never even introduce these types of cereal in the first place - if your toddler never eats it, she won't miss it!

  • If your little one refuses to have milk with the cereal, give it to her in a sippy cup to drink separately

  • If you give your toddler fresh fruit for breakfast, remember to slice the fruit, especially if it's a crunchy apple, as your toddler can choke on chunky pieces of fruit

  • a good way to "hide" those unmentionable vegies is to make muffins out of them

  • cut wholemeal toast into fingers to dip into the runny yolk of a soft-boiled egg.

  • If your toddler refuses to eat breakfast, try making a smoothie. My daughter has these when she refuses to eat any of the other breakfast ideas. They are also a good way to get your toddler to eat fruit.

  • If your toddler has a glass of fruit juice at breakfast, this is more than enough juice for the day. See the section on toddler diarrhoea.
